What does the sailing school CEDENA have to do with POLARWIND Expeditions? Since 2015, POLARWIND Expeditions has supported the sailing school's activities in many ways. We consider the support and promotion of children and young people from socially deprived families in the water sports sector to be meaningful and future-oriented.
Activities carried out so far:
Visits of the sailing children on board of the yacht with an thorough introduction
Sailing training of several days for the sailing teachers of the school
Donation of a monitor and notebook for the theory lessons
Donation of neoprene suits as well as gloves and life jackets for the sailing training
Handing over of sweaters and winter jackets to the children of the sailing school by our sponsor CAPE HORN from Italy
Project „CEDENA in Europe 2017“
Our fellow sailors as well as various sailing clubs in Germany and the Netherlands made it possible to invite a delegation of students and coaches from the sailing school CEDENA to an exchange in Europe in the summer of 2017. Polarwind Expeditionen organized the stay, which included among other things:
Regatta at the Yacht Club Lister at the Biggesee, Germany
Practice at the Yacht Club Münster e. V. as well as donation of an Optimist of the club
Visit in the clubhouse "Cabo de Hornos" in Maintal City, Germany
Visit of the Klimahaus in Bremerhaven in Germany
Regatta in the Dutch city of Hoorn, where Joaquin Cruz, pupil of the sailing school CEDENA won the 1st place
Visit of the foundation Kap Hoorniers in the Dutch city of Hoorn
The success and experience gained in all our projects with CEDENA and our commitment to the development of the community of Puerto Williams, keep us even more committed to this initiative.
That is why we hope to count on the help and cooperation of each of our sailors on board, as usual, for our next 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons. This way we can jointly provide an important contribution to the continuity of CEDENA, thus contributing to the formation of the sailing children of Puerto Williams and consequently, for those who will be the future generation of sailors of Chile and CAPE HORN.
Four New Optimists for the CEDENA Sailing School 2024
Currently, more than 80 children are learning to sail at the CEDENA Sailing School. However, there were only nine Optimists available for daily training and regattas. In 2017, we received a new and fully equipped Optimist as a donation from the Münster Sailing Club e.V., which brought great joy on the other side of the world and is still in use there. At that time, we raised money for the transport and were able to ship it to Chile by sea.
Since sailing is a very exclusive sport in Chile (except in Puerto Williams!), purchasing new boats in Chile is very expensive. For this reason, the idea arose to provide more boats from Germany. With the support of friends, neighbors, and especially sailors, we managed to raise the money to buy 4 Optimists, which – after an almost three-year journey to Chile due to the pandemic – were finally handed over by Skipper Osvaldo E. Escobar Torres to the CEDENA Sailing School in Puerto Williams in February 2024.
